WordPress vs Wix: Which Is Better for Your Business in 2026?
Wix is the easier all-in-one choice; WordPress gives you more control and flexibility. Here is how they compare on ease of use, SEO, cost, ownership and growth, and how to decide.
Short answer: choose Wix if you want an all-in-one website that your team can edit without technical help, with hosting, security and updates included. Choose WordPress if you need maximum flexibility, full ownership of your code and data, a large content library or integrations that a hosted builder cannot handle. Both can look professional and both can rank on Google when they are built properly.
We build on both platforms every week, as a Wix Legend Partner and a WordPress development studio, so this comparison is based on real projects rather than feature lists.

Ease of use
Wix is built for people who are not developers. You click on any text or image and change it, and the site saves and publishes in one place. There is nothing to install or update. For a small team without an in-house developer, that simplicity is the biggest advantage Wix has.
WordPress is also easy to edit day to day when the site is built well, with a clean theme and clear page templates. The difference is maintenance: someone has to look after core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security, either in-house or through a care plan.
Design freedom
Both platforms can produce a bespoke, premium-looking website. Wix, and especially Wix Studio, gives designers precise control over layout and responsive behaviour inside the editor. WordPress has no ceiling at all, because a developer can build a custom theme that does exactly what the design needs. In practice the quality of the design depends far more on the team building the site than on the platform.
SEO: can both rank on Google?
Yes. Google does not prefer one platform over another. What matters is page structure, useful content, fast loading, clean URLs and the links your site earns. Wix includes server-side rendering, editable titles and descriptions, automatic XML sitemaps, a robots.txt editor, structured data on product, event and blog pages, and a redirect manager that imports up to 500 URLs at once (Wix SEO features). WordPress offers the same controls through its settings and a lightweight SEO plugin, plus complete control over code and hosting for advanced technical SEO.
WordPress powers about 40% of all websites and Wix about 4%, according to W3Techs (October 2026). Popularity does not decide rankings, but it does mean WordPress has the largest ecosystem of developers and plugins.
If you choose Wix, our Wix SEO checklist covers every setting worth changing.
Cost: what you really pay
Wix bundles hosting, security and updates into one plan, so running costs are predictable. One independent cost guide lists Wix plans at about $156 to $468 a year and typical WordPress hosting from about $26 to $192 a year, before premium themes, plugins and maintenance (WebsiteSetup). WordPress software itself is free, so its total cost depends on hosting quality, the plugins you need and who maintains the site.
Design and development usually cost more than either platform. Our pricing page explains what drives the cost of a professional website.
Ownership and portability
With WordPress you own everything: the code, the database and the hosting account. You can move to another host at any time. With Wix you own your content and domain, but the site runs on Wix's platform and cannot be exported as a working WordPress site. If long-term portability matters to you, WordPress has the edge.
E-commerce
Wix Stores is a strong choice for small and medium catalogues, with payments, shipping and inventory built in. WordPress with WooCommerce suits stores that need custom product logic, complex integrations or full control of the checkout. For brands that want a hosted platform focused purely on selling, Shopify is often the best fit; see Shopify vs WooCommerce.
Custom features
When a business needs something no app provides, such as a member portal, a custom calculator or a connection to a CRM, Wix offers Wix Velo for custom code, databases and API integrations inside the site. WordPress handles the same needs with plugins or custom development, and has no platform limits on what can be built.
Which should you choose?

- You run a service business, studio, restaurant or small store

- You need custom integrations, complex e-commerce or special hosting
- Full ownership and portability of your code and data matter to you
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix or WordPress better for SEO?
Neither has a built-in ranking advantage. A well-structured Wix site will outrank a poorly built WordPress site and the other way round. WordPress gives more technical control; Wix handles the technical basics for you.
Can I move from Wix to WordPress later?
Yes, but it is a rebuild rather than an export. Content can be moved, and with a proper redirect plan you keep your search rankings. Our redesign SEO checklist explains how.
Which is cheaper?
Wix is usually cheaper and more predictable for small sites. WordPress can be cheaper to host but costs more to maintain properly. Compare the total over three years, not just the first month.
