Wix SEO Checklist: 15 Steps to Help Your Wix Site Rank

Wix includes the technical SEO basics, but they only help if you set them up. Work through these 15 steps to give your Wix website the best chance of ranking on Google.

Is Wix good for SEO? Yes. Wix sites can rank well on Google. Wix renders pages on the server so search engines can read them, generates sitemaps automatically, and lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs, redirects, robots.txt and structured data (Wix SEO features). What decides rankings is how you use those tools, and the content and links your site earns. This checklist covers the steps we follow on every Wix and Wix Studio build.

Foundations

  1. Connect a custom domain on a premium plan. A free Wix address is not a serious option for search. Use one domain everywhere: on your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
  2. Make sure the site is indexable. In SEO Settings, check that search engines are allowed to index the site and that no important page is set to noindex.
  3. Verify Google Search Console. Wix can verify your domain and submit your sitemap for you. Verify Bing Webmaster Tools too; Wix supports site verification for Bing as well.
  4. Decide one main keyword per page. Your home page targets your main service and the rest each own a topic. Two pages should never compete for the same search.

On-page settings

  1. Write unique page titles of about 50 to 60 characters with the main keyword near the start, for example "Wedding Photographer in Austin | Studio Name".
  2. Write meta descriptions of about 140 to 160 characters that tell the searcher what they get and why to click.
  3. Use short, readable URL slugs such as /services/kitchen-remodeling. If you change a slug on a live page, add a 301 redirect.
  4. Use one H1 per page and organise the rest of the content with H2 and H3 headings that match how people search.
  5. Add descriptive alt text to images, describing what the image shows, not a list of keywords.
  6. Link pages together. Each service page should link to related services and guides; each blog post should link to the service it supports.

Technical settings

  1. Check structured data. Wix adds markup to product, event and blog pages automatically. Add organization or local business details in your business info so they stay consistent.
  2. Set up redirects before you rename pages. The URL Redirect Manager imports up to 500 URLs from a CSV, which makes migrations from another platform manageable.
  3. Keep pages fast. Wix converts images to WebP and serves them through a CDN, but large videos, many fonts and stacked animations still slow pages down. Test key pages on a phone connection.

Content and trust

  1. Publish helpful content. Answer the questions customers ask before they buy, in your own words and from your own experience. Google's guidance is to write for people first, show who wrote the content and why they know the topic (Google).
  2. Build local and industry trust. If you meet Google Business Profile rules (a location customers visit, or a business that travels to customers), create a profile and collect reviews (Google Business Profile help). List your business on relevant directories with the same name, address and website.

Common Wix SEO mistakes

  • Leaving default titles such as "Home | My Site"
  • Putting important text inside images, where search engines cannot read it
  • Duplicating near-identical pages for every town or service
  • Changing URLs during a redesign without redirects (see our redesign SEO checklist)
  • Adding special "AI files" in the hope of appearing in AI answers. Google says no extra files or markup are needed for AI Overviews; normal SEO best practice applies (Google).

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix worse for SEO than WordPress?

No. WordPress gives more technical control, while Wix handles the basics for you. Content, structure and links matter far more than the platform. We compare them in WordPress vs Wix.

How long does SEO take on a Wix site?

A new domain usually takes weeks to be crawled and months to build steady rankings. Technical fixes can help sooner; content and links compound over time.

Does Wix Studio have the same SEO features?

Yes. Wix Studio sites use the same SEO settings, sitemaps and redirect tools, with more design control for agencies and professionals.
